The Sun Salutation

A yoga exercise that's best done every day—first thing in the morning after getting up.

The Sun Salutation is a dynamic yoga exercise that prepares the body and mind for the day. Surya Namaskar, as it’s called in Sanskrit, literally means “to greet the sun.” Admittedly, you should practice it regularly to truly experience the flow. But practice makes perfect. And it’s 10 minutes well spent. Eventually, you’ll notice how your flexibility and resilience increase—both physically and mentally. Your posture improves as your core and back are strengthened. Your body is stretched in all directions, which allows for freer breathing and lengthens the spine. Digestion is aided, and blood flow to the brain is stimulated. All of this helps you find calm and regain your focus. It’s a holistically soothing ritual that relieves stress and builds energy and a zest for life.
