Every year, almost 200,000 people make a pilgrimage across Europe on the Way of St. James. The path also leads through Austria, but not through Burgenland. Now, following a private initiative, a Way of St. James in northern Burgenland has been established.
The basilica in Frauenkirchen is the starting point for Burgenland's first Way of St. James. A plaque in front of the pilgrimage church describes this route for pilgrims and hikers.
The 52-kilometer hiking trail leads from Frauenkirchen via Halbturn to Neusiedl am See in the small Lower Austrian pilgrimage town of Maria Ellend in the district of Bruck an der Leitha. In Maria Ellend, the Burgenland route then connects to the international Way of St. James.
The PILGERTOR "MARIA AUF DER HEIDE" stands for arriving after a long journey or leaving - to a set destination. The visible sign prepares the pilgrims for a dignified entry into the basilica before their spiritual renewal through the pilgrimage.
Frauenkirchen is the intersection of ancient pilgrimage routes. Thanks to the initiatives of the association "Friends of the Basilica", the place of grace was also connected to the international pilgrimage route "Mária út". This Marian Way connects the two Marian shrines of Mariazell and Frauenkirchen - starting and ending at the Frauenkirchen Basilica.
The route from the basilica through the city, past the St. Martins Spa & Lodge, Zicksee, Lange Lacke to the federal border between Pamhagen and Apetlon and via Hungary to Mariazell.
